Background information

China`s largest and fastest growing city will stage Grand Prix racing for the second time. Shanghai is the fourth Eastern destination to join the F1 calendar after Australia, Japan and Malaysia. The $240 million, 5.45 km Shanghai track, which is designed in the shape of a Chinese character - `shang`, or to rise - is the latest in a series of high-profile building projects for the city and seats 200,000 race enthusiasts.

Within the circuit will be a host of activities designed for the enjoyment and entertainment of motor sport fans with shops, restaurants, amusement arcades and a kart racing circuit. Like a pearl set in the west coast of the Pacific Ocean, Shanghai is the showcase of China`s fast growth. It will be exciting to witness the F1 drivers in a city where anything is possible. Be there to experience the thrill of the Grand Prix of China. Following the Suzaka circuit in Japan on October 9th, Shanghai will host the China Grand Prix, the country's second-ever F1 event, on October 16th.

Covering an area of 5.3 square kilometers and featuring 14 punishing turns (including seven left-hand and seven right-hand turns, which will offer participants a tremendous challenge), the automobile theme park will be divided into a racing area and associated facilities, covering 2.5 and 2.8 square kilometres respectively. The 5.451-kilometre racing track is shaped like the Chinese character "shang, " as in "Speeding with Shanghai, " according to the blueprint designed by the German firm Tilke Engineering & Architecture.

The stadium has 50,000 fixed seats and can accommodate up to 200,000 people, about 1 percent of the population of greater Shanghai. According to a computer simulation, it will take about one minute and 34 seconds for a Formula One car to run a lap, with average speeds running close to 205 km/h, which makes the Shanghai International Circuit one of the longest lap raceways in the world. The longest beeline section of track is designed between the 13th and the 14th turns. On this 1.2-kilometer-long raceway, cars will travel at full speed, reaching maximums of 327 km/h.

The new Shanghai International Circuit will not only give participants a new passion for competition, but will also provide spectators with a great race and an intense spectacle.
