LOCATION
1: PUERTO DEL
SOL
Puerta
del Sol (Spanish for "Gate
of the Sun") is one of
the most well known and busiest
places in Madrid. It is the
centre (Km 0) of the radial
network of Spanish roads, literally
the centre of Spain from which
road kilometre distances are
calculated.
Plaza
Puerta del Sol is the perfect
starting point to explore Madrid.
This bustling, centrally located
square is one of the city's
most lively places and it is
well-renowned for having some
of the best dinning and entertainment
in all of Madrid.
The
square also contains the famous
clock whose bells mark the
traditional eating of the Twelve
Grapes and the beginning of
a new year. In the middle of
the square is a large equestrian
statue of King Carlos III.
The King looks out to a beautiful
18th century red brick building,
the former main post office. The
plaza's name originates from
the eastern city gate located
here in the 15th century. The
gate was probably called after
a sun drawn on it, hence the
name Puerta del Sol or 'Sun
Gate'. The current semi-oval
square was created in the 19th
century.
Puerta
del Sol is also the location
of the symbol of Madrid: a
20 ton statue of a bear eating
fruits from a tree. The official
name of the statue is 'El Oso
y El Madroño'. The Madroño
is a tree related to the strawberry
tree.
Eye
Candy Media is proud to partner
with Filma Madrid and promote
the festival’s activities
in the most central location
of Madrid in order to support
the city’s culture and
reach the cinema ‘lovers’.
LOCATION
2: PLAZA
DE SANTA ANA
Plaza Santa Ana is a very pleasant
square just off Puerta del Sol
and situated in an older barrio
of Madrid; indeed the house where
Miguel de Cervantes (writer of
Don Quixote) lived is a couple
of streets away in calle Cervantes.
It has a statue of playwright
Calderon de la Barca in the centre
and garden areas round about.The
square is home to the oldest
theatre in Madrid, Teatro Español,
which was built in 1745 and puts
on classical Spanish productions.
The history of the square dates
back to the times of Joseph Bonaparte
who demolished Santa Ana Convent
to open up this space.
Come here anytime and you'll
find the place buzzing. It's
a popular meeting place for locals
and tourists alike and it is
surrounded by nightlife venues.
As mentioned above, the neoclassical
Teatro Espanol building and the
art deco Hotel Victoria (a favourite
with bullfighters) are both here.
As for drinks, the Cerveceria
Alemana is a good place for a
relaxing chat, and then there's
the Villarosa (which featured
in Pedro Almodovar's movie High
Heels), once a flamenco dance
hall, it's now a trendy bar.
