THE EVENTS
This year marks 40 years of nation building in the
history of Singapore as a sovereign nation. National
Day Parade 2005 promises to be a national event that
will engage all fellow Singaporeans to celebrate 40 years
of nation building together. To add to the significance
of the occasion, this year’s National Day Parade
will be held at the historic and nostalgic location of
Padang, where the very first National Day Parade was
held in 1966.

Centered on the theme, "40 YEARS OF NATION BUILDING",
NDP 05 aims to bring pride and patriotism to all Singaporeans
as they reflect upon the last 40 years of nation building
and achievements, and pay tribute to the unyielding commitment
and determination of elder generations who brought the
country to where it is today. At the same time, they
will also be celebrating the vitality and dynamism of
the younger generation who continue to strive hard to
build a better life, better home and better future for
Singapore.
A special feature of NDP this year is that we will see
a series of large scale celebrations held simultaneously
across Singapore beyond the exciting Parade and Show
at Padang itself, networking and bonding fellow Singaporeans
across the island to celebrate National Day together.
As part of this year’s NDP, community celebrations
will be held concurrently on a big scale in the Heartlands
at Tampines, Yishun and Jurong East. s.
Parade Concept – August 9th 5pm – 9pm
As the anchor ceremonial showpiece of the Parada@Padang,
the parade continues to retain the strong traditions
that are associated with past NDP’s parade segment
and will be formed by participants representing the five
pillars of Total Defense.
While continuing to retain
the pomp and pageantry of a military-style parade,
the parade will incorporate some new features to increase
the celebratory mood among the spectators and home-viewers.
Parade Format
The parade continues to showcase the precision and discipline
of a military-style parade. These elements retain the
essence of a parade and provide a nostalgic link to NDPs
of the past. Adaptations such as the 16 military fifes
and drums escorting the Regimental Sergeant Major and
the transformation of the supporting contingents will
make the parade more lively and distinctive. The parade
will comprise the Guards-of-honour, Colours Party and
Supporting Contingents formed by the SAF, Home Team and
civilian organisation representing all 5 elements of
Total Defense. Traditional crowd-pleasers such as the
State Flag Fly-past, Aerial Salute, Presidential Inspection,
21 Guns Salute and Feu-de-Joie (Fire of Joy) will continue
to be featured in the P&C segment.
There will also be a 9-day fun-filled Carnival at Marina
South - featuring colorful displays, fun-fair, concerts
and fireworks - to show the dynamic and fun-loving side
of Singaporeans. Here’s a taster of what fun is
to be had.
Singapore Fireworks Festival
Ever seen the sky ablaze with beautiful lights? Now
you can with the Singapore Fireworks Festival. With the
firework launch pad situated very close by at Marina
East, spectators viewing the spectacular show along Marina
South Promenade will be all the more exciting to their
close proximity.
Be amazed by the colourful and thrilling explosion of
energy as the night sky lights up above The Bat on selected
days, culminating in the all extravaganza that is the
countdown to National Day.
With fireworks of all shapes and sizes, all colours
and hues, choreographed with uplifting music performed
by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, this marvellous showcase
of light will bring new meaning to the word PARTY! On
at Carnival Marina, experience a Portuguese-themed display
on 6 Aug, a Singaporean-themed one on 8Aug and a French
themed show 14 Aug 2005 at 1945hrs, 2359 hrs and 2030
hrs respectively.
Auto-Trail
An un-precedented first for Singapore as an Auto Drag
(1/4 mile) takes place on the roads co-organised by Singapore
Motor Sport Association. The Auto-Trail consists of three
segments; Auto Drag, Auto Sounds and Auto Queen. The
Auto Drag celebrity challenge will feature local and
overseas celebrities; intervals between drag sessions
will feature exhibitions and stunts by professionals:
Auto Sound includes an auto exhibition for auto grooming
and engine performance and there will also be a Go-Kart
challenge
making this an event not to be missed.
