History of the event
The Stockholm International Film Festival is the leading competitive film festival in northern Europe and continues to manifest itself as a groundbreaking event. From the start the festival’s purpose has been to launch young filmmakers and broaden the forum for innovative quality films in Scandinavia.
The annual eleven-day gathering of cinema lovers, talents and professionals in the beautiful city of Stockholm is the highlight of the year, raising enthusiasm rarely seen among frosty Swedes! To get shelter from the cold and dark winter nights, the people of Stockholm flock to the sold-out screenings and happening parties arranged by the Stockholm International Film Festival.
The Film Festival film sections give proof of great width, presenting films from a vast geographic spectra: from upcoming American independent stories to the visions of the Nordic and Baltic countries and the images of Asia. However, the focus remains on first time filmmakers, not least manifested in the festival's scholarship 1 Kilometre Film supporting young Swedish directors.
They also are fond of the cinematic traditions - Elia Kazan, Gena Rowlands, Roman Polanski and Lauren Bacall are among those they have paid tribute to with retrospectives as well as the prestigious Stockholm Lifetime Achievement Award. Among other distinguished guests of the festival are Dennis Hopper, Quentin Tarantino, Joel & Ethan Coen, Lars von Trier, Rod Steiger, Roger Corman, Ang Lee, Frances MacDormand, Alexandr Sokurov, Paul Morrisey and Aki Kaurismäki.
Useful Info about Sergels Torg – a.k.a “Plattan”
The square takes its name from one of the country's most famous artists, Johan Tobias Sergel (1740-1814). Heated discussions for and against the square have ranged back and forth
ever since it was completed in the 1960s. And right now, there's a
political debate in progress into the ways in which the square might change and develop in the future. The square space is about 2785 square meters. This doesn’t include the underground area.
Three of Stockholm’s most famous shopping streets lead to the square (Drottningatan, Sergelgatan and Hamngatan).
Surrounding the Sergel Torg:
Burger King
Cafeteria
Subway center
Mega Store (One of Stockholm’s biggest Music Shop)
Bookshop
Shopping malls
Restaurants
Sergels Torg is the Cultural Focal Point of Stockholm (opening hours 09.00-19.00)
Kulturhuset on Sergels Torg in Stockholm was opened in 1974. With its central location and the architecture of the square, which is typical of its time, Kulturhuset has come to symbolize Stockholm and the development of modernism in Sweden.
Kulturhuset has 3.3 million visitors per year and they can't be wrong! A highly valued centre of Stockholm's cultural life, offering exhibitions, performances and a library. In Kulturhuset you will also find the Stockholm City Theatre, one of the country's largest and most influential theatres. Here you will also find children's activities, Lava - a project room for young culture and Sweden's only specialist library for comic strips.
