HISTORY
ALLIANZ SUISSE OPEN - TENNIS SINCE 1915
The Allianz Suisse Open celebrates its 90th birthday in 2005 . "Reinvent
yourself", this is the slogan of the traditional event. The Allianz
Suisse Open ranks today among the three largest sporting events in Switzerland.
In its beginnings the tournament took place on the courts of the Palace Hotel.
Then the event moved from the courts lying highly over the village down into
the heart of Gstaad.
In 1937 the event was named "International Tennis Championships of Switzerland".
Koebi Hermenjat, today's Tournament Director, participated in the event at
the tender age of 11 years as a ball boy, later took over the role of linesman
and finally participated as a player in the 50s. Since 1968 he has been the
Tournament Director. The Allianz Suisse Open has already welcomed many celebrities:
Boris Becker, Michael Stich, Sergi Bruguera, Pat Rafter, Carlos Moya, Alex
Corretja, Albert Costa and of course last but not least Roger Federer, who
have all made their appearances at the tournament in Gstaad.
Probably the most beautiful day in his career as Tournament Director was
July 11, 2004. On this day the first Swiss since 1980 won the title in Gstaad
. Roger Federer won the Allianz Suisse Open Gstaad and the first tournament
in his own country.

CHARITY
Since 2003 the Allianz Suisse Open Gstaad has set the goal to donate money
every year for a good purpose. In 2003 funds from the qualifying and exhibition
on Sunday were donated to the Theodora foundation. Last summer, UNICEF
received money for their project "Sport In A Box" from the qualifying
and exhibition Sunday as well as from several rackets which were sold by
eBay. Also in 2005 the Allianz Suisse Open wants to donate money to a good
cause in supporting the "Little Dream Foundation".
EXHIBITION
For a short period of time on Qualifying-Sunday, the world is turned up side
down in the Roy Emerson Arena . The on-court battle is put to the background
while entertainment, shows and fun take center stage. Tennis players and
show business stars provide plenty of entertainment. You will laugh so much
you will split your sides.
